The spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lives on through two exemplary examples in the community
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas - The community celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and those who have embraced his message of love and service to others, at the 28th Annual Commemorative Celebration presented by Impact Church of The Woodlands, hosted by The Woodlands United Methodist Church, and sponsored by The Woodlands Development Company.
In a commemorative tribute, Dr. Dana Hoyt, President of Sam Houston State University, shared Dr King’s message of the importance of education, and that it had a two-fold purpose...utility and culture.
“Education should set and weigh truth from false, real from unreal, and fact from fiction,” said Dr. Hoyt of King’s message. “Education has become even more critical. Intelligence is not enough. Intelligence and character are the goals of education.”
Two were recognized with the prestigious Drum Major Award, whose involvement and service in the community embrace Dr. King’s message.
Henry Sneed, the owner of Henry’s Barbershop, a school bus driver, who also finds the time to minister to prisoners on a one-to-one basis, and Mario Coll, who has distinguished himself through involvement with numerous charities, were this year’s recipients for their exemplary service.
Emceed by Tom Abrahams, News Anchor for ABC 13/KTRK-TV, the ceremony consisted of solemn prayer and celebratory music. The Woodlands Area Mass King Choir, the Children’s Mass King Choir, the Dr. King Praise Bank, and the Oak Ridge High Air Force Junior ROTC, all participated in the event.
A committee of thirty community leaders chaired by Myrna Wise Irons, and over three dozen companies and individuals contributed in some way to ensure the success of the celebration, that will benefit the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund. To contribute to the fund, checks can be made payable to “Dr. King Scholarships.” Contact Impact Church of The Woodlands for more information.
