The Woodlands Children's Museum has seen an explosion in visitors in the past few years – with more than 97,000 guests expected this year.

To handle the growth and resulting wear and tear, the nonprofit is looking to the community to help it build new exhibits, repair and maintain existing displays, and expand programs and events.

Angela Colton, the museum’s executive director, said she hopes that area businesses, corporations, individuals and foundations will consider the many giving opportunities available at the museum.

“For example,” she said, “the museum is seeking a sponsor to make possible the installation of new mat flooring in the water-play area to provide a nonskid surface for the children. And we want to add more playscapes, durable climbing mats and play elements in the toddler area.”

She also hopes to add a new Lego table with an educational component – an acrylic screen that runs down the middle displaying educational processes and posing challenges to children.

Colton explained that thanks to a generous donation from RE/MAX The Woodlands & Spring, the museum’s playhouse will receive a makeover, including new signs to illustrate early child development and learning opportunities. The playhouse is used to teach socialization skills and how members of a family relate to one another.

The real estate company has agreed to sponsor the museum’s playhouse from 2015 to 2017.

“The generous gift from RE/MAX will help us with both the installation of new signs and the upkeep of one of our guests’ favorite places to play in the museum,” Colton said.

Strike has also made a generous donation to the museum’s Read-A-Lot Kingdom exhibit, where literacy programs take center stage. Strike’s gift will be used to add a literary and cultural component in which important cultural events will be shared through books and costumes that teach the traditions of other cultures.

“We are so grateful to Strike for believing and sharing in our mission to educate, empower and excite children through play,” Colton said.

The nonprofit started at first as a museum without walls. From its Woodlands Mall location, it moved to its current 11,000-square-foot location in the Panther Creek Shopping Center off Woodlands Parkway in July 2010.

In 2013, the museum had more than 70,000 visitors. The following year, an additional 10,000 came.

“More people are becoming frequent visitors,” Colton said. “We honor the responsibility to invest more in our space and more in our events for them.”

The Woodlands Children’s Museum mission does not stop inside the facility’s walls, however. It has a number of outreach programs, which include several national initiatives promoting health through community programs.

The museum has gained new staff members to help with the growing number of guests.

More than 40 percent of the museum’s operating revenue comes from gifts from individuals, businesses and corporations. These donations enable the museum to keep admission and membership costs affordable, develop exhibits and underwrite school field trips to the museum as well as outreach programs.

In addition to making a donation to support the museum, Colton said there are a number of ways individuals can make a difference – from spending a few hours volunteering to making a commitment by becoming a member.

“Last but not least, the easiest way to demonstrate how much you care is to stop by the museum as often as you can,” Colton said. “There are always fun events on the calendar, new art projects in the MUSE and plenty of room to play in the exhibits. Keep an eye on the calendar so you don't miss any of the action.”

Located at 4775 W. Panther Creek Drive, Suite 280, in The Woodlands, 77381, the museum offers educational exhibits, a full calendar of exciting activities and a cool space for creative play.
