CONROE, Texas – River Plantation Country Club will become the second golf course in the greater Houston area to be recognizedas a designated programming location for The First Tee of Greater Houston with activities beginning in the fall, announced Doug Earle, executive director of The First Tee® of Greater Houston.

“The First Tee of Greater Houston is delighted to partner with River Plantation to provide our program to the youth of Montgomery County,” said Earle. “Starting this fall, we will offer The First Tee Life Skills Experience which develops character, interpersonal skills, and healthy habits using the game of golf as the vehicle.”

The First Tee of Greater Houston, which is the largest in the nearly 200 chapter worldwide network of The First Tee, is a subsidiary of the Houston Golf Association. The First Tee is a youth development program that implements and teaches The First Tee Life Skills Experience, as well as how to play the game. Participants are exposed to invaluable life skills through golf-related activities.

River Plantation joins Quail Valley Golf Course in Missouri City as a designated programming location for The First Tee of Greater Houston. The First Tee of Greater Houston operates facilities at.the Golf Club of Houston (formerly Redstone) in Humble, Houston Oaks Country Club and Family Recreation Center in Hockley. River Plantation has a longstanding relationship with the Houston Golf Association’s Junior Golf Program, hosting junior golf tournaments since 1980.

“We are excited about expanding our partnership with River Plantation and offering opportunities from The First Tee to youngsters in Montgomery County,” said Steve Timms, president and CEO of the Houston Golf Association and The First Tee of Greater Houston. “Our goal continues to be to positively impact the youth in our community through golf.”

River Plantation is a private country club, featuring golf, swimming, tennis, dining and other social activities. In July 2013, Dallas-based Eagle Golf assumed management of the club as it struggled with membership losses. Over the past 12 months, River Plantation has netted 90 new members. Its support of The First Tee is another way of gaining exposure for membership opportunities while also giving back to the community.

“The First Tee program is a wonderful way to introduce kids to golf who would otherwise not have the opportunity,” said Mike Woodbridge, PGA, head golf professional at River Plantation. “The goal of the program is to teach the values that the game promotes as much as the game itself. The program will also introduce many new people to River Plantation and help create future golfers to keep the game of golf and participation at River Plantation strong.”
