CONROE, Texas -- Looking for that statement piece of furniture that is not only functional but will become a family heirloom? Then head west of Conroe on Highway 105, and visit Mister Robert’s Furniture. Although new to Conroe, Bob Way, the owner of Mister Robert’s Furniture, is not new to the business. Seventeen years of selling antique furniture, Way has acquired the knowledge of quality wood and construction.

The showroom displays an eclectic mix of unique furniture made by local sources using reclaimed wood from 100-year old houses. The ultimate in recycling…taking seasoned hard woods that have served out their usefulness, and give them a new purpose.

“It’s not what I originally set out to do,” said Way. “It’s what the business has evolved to. It’s the eco-friendly thing to do.”

The result is beautifully constructed, chic furniture that’s not massed-produced for the masses. Originally an antique dealer of fine European antiques, Way has kept his fingers on the pulse of the consumer market, and shifted his focus to the current aesthetic trend of an aged appearance. Mister Robert’s Furniture definitely has ‘the look.’

The store is located six miles west of I-45N by Lake Conroe, at 13782 Hwy 105, between 3083 and the dam and April Sound. Store hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 10:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.; Sunday 12 - 5 p.m. Way is quick to point out that GPS locators have not been accurate in locating the store.

Antique dealers have indicated that this ‘look’ is not just a trend, but a demand by conscientious consumers to repurpose materials as opposed to disposing of them. The Spring Antique Mall has coined the phrase ‘retro-cycling’ to describe the recycling of old, antique materials. And these ‘repurposed’ items will in fact, become highly collectible.

“The antiques of tomorrow will be the one-of-a-kind items made by cottage industry artisans today,” said Karla Baker, the owner of the Spring Antique Mall.

The concept of recycling materials is actually a recycled idea itself. During military campaigns solders made one-of-a-kind crafts from their shell casings and other disposables, and the items became highly-collectible ‘trench art.” During the period between the Civil War through the Great Depression, decorative items were made from odds and ends and referred to as ‘tramp art.’ And for centuries laboring tradespeople made highly decorative items that were also utilitarian. This ‘folk art’ is also highly collectible for its rarity and uniqueness.

Mister Robert’s Furniture is more than just decorative. Furniture from reclaimed wood is like ‘folk art,’ it not only has beauty and character, it’s functional. Whether it’s your aesthetic, or you want a single statement piece for home or office, think about the purpose…and think ‘repurpose.’
